Digitalisation Pathways Playbook

Last reviewed: April 2026

For many SMEs, digitalisation decisions do not begin with a grant application. They begin with workflow pain points, sector requirements, customer expectations, or a need for better visibility. As of April 2026, official IMDA and SMEs Go Digital pages continue to highlight pre-approved digital solutions, industry digital plans, and advisory tools that help SMEs identify suitable pathways.

Who should use this pathway

Best fit:

  • SMEs still clarifying what kind of digital solution they need
  • sector-specific businesses that can benefit from industry digital plans
  • teams that want to compare practical, market-proven solutions rather than start from a blank slate

Support scope and practical use

Digitalisation pathways are useful for:

  • problem discovery
  • solution shortlisting
  • staged adoption planning
  • improving the fit between business need and chosen tool

Strong evidence

A stronger digitalisation case usually includes:

  • current process maps or a clear description of workflow pain
  • role-based user needs
  • data points on delay, rework, missed leads, stock inaccuracies, or manual effort
  • a staged adoption plan and training logic

Common implementation issues

  • choosing tools before defining the process problem
  • confusing vendor demos with business requirements
  • buying functionality the team will not use
  • no plan for data migration, adoption, or process standardisation

Important note

Warning
A digital solution does not create value by itself. Value usually comes from process redesign, user adoption, data discipline, and management follow-through.
