Why You May Not Be a Strong Grant Fit and What to Do Instead
Last reviewed: April 2026
Some projects are commercially sound but not strong grant cases. Recognising this early can save significant time.
Signals that grant fit may be weak
- project timing is too urgent for reimbursement-driven routes
- scope is exploratory and not yet stable
- evidence for grant-style value-for-money is limited
- company cannot support compliance and claims discipline
What to do instead
- evaluate accelerator programmes for capability and market access
- evaluate pilot funding for deployment-led validation
- evaluate financing pathways where speed and flexibility are priorities
Practical redirect sequence
- restate the business objective in one sentence
- shortlist one grant and two non-grant pathways
- compare timeline, evidence burden, and downside risk
- pick one primary route and one fallback route
