Why You May Not Be a Strong Grant Fit and What to Do Instead

Last reviewed: April 2026

Some projects are commercially sound but not strong grant cases. Recognising this early can save significant time.

Signals that grant fit may be weak

  • project timing is too urgent for reimbursement-driven routes
  • scope is exploratory and not yet stable
  • evidence for grant-style value-for-money is limited
  • company cannot support compliance and claims discipline

What to do instead

  • evaluate accelerator programmes for capability and market access
  • evaluate pilot funding for deployment-led validation
  • evaluate financing pathways where speed and flexibility are priorities

Practical redirect sequence

  • restate the business objective in one sentence
  • shortlist one grant and two non-grant pathways
  • compare timeline, evidence burden, and downside risk
  • pick one primary route and one fallback route
